Humans: The True Invasive Species

Image
"We are, in fact, the masters, like it or not...We have grown into everywhere, spreading like a new growth over the entire surface, touching and affecting every other kind of life, incorporating ourselves" (Lewis Thomas 916).          Mankind has always strived, and continues to strive, for advancement; whether that be in science, inventions, etc. Knowledge is power, and there are many in this world who wish for that power as their own. Thomas focuses on the effect mankind has had on the world in his essay. Many do not understand the true extent to which our species has affected the planet. They may believe that we have no control over weather patterns and natural disasters, when in fact, we do.          With more industrialization that has taken place over history, more pollution has been released into the air, causing the environment to become toxic. This toxicity has caused entire species to die an...

11 Year Old Genius Graduates High School and Goes to Trade School

Image
Completely Factual News Report by: Carter Buser and Veronica Ballios Eleven year old, Hausner Christian is the first eleven year old to ever graduate from high school. Hausner somehow conjured a 6.2 GPA, shattering the realm of possibility while achieving 102%’s in 24 out of 24 of his AP level courses. Many seniors in the high school who were seven years older than Christian attempted to bully him, but Hausner’s insane brain power threw them halfway across the state. Some believe this is not possible; even we were a little skeptical of it at first until we saw his real powers. After Hausner graduated, we received shocking news from him that he had turned down all of his full rides to every prestigious school in the world and instead took up an offer from Dorsey Schools, a lesser known trade school, with a $10 scholarship. Leaders of Stanford and Harvard all gasped in shock when they got the call, some even cried. It has been told from Hausner's neighbors t...

My Three Englishes

Image
Communication is one of the most important aspects of social interaction. The way in which we communicate in our lives varies depending on the groups we are surrounded by, like friends, family, or teachers, and the situations we are in, whether formal or informal. When I am with my family, I speak a mixture of English and Macedonian since I am from there and that is my grandparents' first language. I am not fluent in it, so our sentences consist of half English and half Macedonian most of the time.  This jumble of language may seem confusing and messy from an outsider, but to us, it is just the way in which we connect our cultures and speak with one another. Another instance where I change my language is when I am with my friends. Lacking the need for formality, we are all extremely wild when we speak and do not have to worry about offending each other. Since we are all very comfortable being ourselves when together, there is no mask to hide our true selves...

Metacognitive Reflection

Image
Over the course of this semester, I have grown in my ability to understand what I need to include in my writing. Over the last couple years, I have learned how to structure short responses and essays. This year I went one step further to work on connecting my writing to real-world issues. Every time I received a piece of my writing back with a grade, I would go over what I wrote and see how I could further analyze what I had originally written. Also, it is hard for me to focus in the allotted time limits when writing in class essays, so I worked on my ability to clear my mind of any other distractions in order to focus on my goal of finishing a well-thought-out essay.       I have improved in my ability to quickly come up with a thesis and plan what evidence I am going to use in the development of my response. I used to take close to 10 minutes to formulate my idea in my head, which would leave very little time to writing. Now I am able to spend more...

An Alternate Ending to Huck Finn That Is Not Frustrating

Image
It had been a week of planning how to save Jim when I, Huck Finn, was tired of Tom's games. We could have freed Jim 10 times by now, but noooo, Tom had to make him live like a real prisoner. I am going to tell him that we are going to go with my plan since it is easier. I hope he decides to listen to me and doesn't end up laughing at me instead. Even if he tries to make fun of me in front of the old gang back home, I can just say he is lying. Since when does Tom ever tell the truth anyways? He is always saying things are going to happen and then they never do. Why does this serious situation have to be the first time he actually goes through with his games? Oh here he comes now! "Tom! We can't keep up with this foolishness anymore! We need to free Jim as soon as possible so then we can be free again!" "'It don't make no difference how foolish it is, it's the RIGHT way — and it's the regular way. And there ain't no OTHER way, that ever ...

The Importance of America's Freedom

Image
America, the "land of the free and home of the brave," as the National Anthem states, attracts people from all over the world for many reasons. The most prominent is because of the basic ideals the country was founded on; freedom and independence. Those of us that have had the privilege to be born an American and live our whole lives in the United States may not understand just how lucky we are due to growing up with and being surrounded by this freedom. Unfortunately, the entire world does not have the same capabilities as Americans. Their government may behave in such a way where the people have no say in how they can live their daily lives. They may even be punished for having ideas of their own and expressing their individuality. Then when they hear about the freedom they could have in America, they strive to live there.       For the many that have immigrated into the United States, at first it is liberating; the fact that now they are able t...

Were the Puritans Really as Amazing as They Thought?

Image
The Puritanical society was based around very strict values that each member had to abide by, or else they would be punished. They praised themselves for being fully committed to God and believed they set a perfect example for how everyone should behave. Never did the thought cross their mind that the way in which they lived was flawed. Let me tell you why that is a very closed minded attitude.       In theory, yes their rules should have worked, but we all know humans have their way of messing things up.         The first failure was when they set such strict laws for the people to abide by. When someone is restricted from being able to have any fun, they become bored all too quickly. Even in the modern world, an illegal item automatically becomes a prize of which people have sought after. They will start to break those laws in different ways, regardless if those moments of rebelliousness are done in secret or others kno...
